Electro Discharge Machining Offers Fast and Accurate Metal Cutting
Posted: Feb 26, 2014
When purchasing parts or components that are used in machinery or electronic devices it is vital to look into a reputable supplier. They will provide products that are manufactured according to industry standards, hence will show expected performance when they are used. They can provide items ranging from regular ones to those that are exclusively used only for niche purposes. They also enable you to subcontract manufacturing which saves time and money in obtaining the required parts. In addition to offering parts they also offer a host of other services as well.
One of the services they offer is Electro Discharge Machining (EDM). It is a process that cuts metal using a spark erosion process and is used for metals that cannot be worked using traditional machining techniques. There are three types of EDM Machining which are wire, sinker and small hole and selection of any of these types is based on the kind of outcome required. EDM is seen in so many industries where making production parts or prototypes are essential. The tool that is used for cutting the metal will discharge thousands of sparks on it. The tool never touches the work piece and the cutting is done only by the sparks. It is very effective in creating small cuts, detailed contours, angled cuts in regularly used metals such as steel as well as not so common metal types such as carbide, titanium, hastelloy, etc. It is the best option when shapes and geometries have to be created within parts and assemblies.
The EDM process dates back it discovery to1770 when Joseph Preistly noticed electrical discharges removing materials in his experiments. The foundation of today’s electro discharge machining was laid by Lazarenkos, two Soviet researchers who developed it in the 1940’ s. EDM was formerly confined to the tool industry. Now it is used by the electronics sector and aerospace industry. The reason why it is a preferred means of metal cutting is because it works by melting or vaporizing it, hence the cutting results are very accurate. The turnaround time for metal cutting is fast which is another reason why it is preferred. The cost of EDM is nominal and subcontracting it also does not cost much. There is very little debris left after cutting. It can cut easily through hard metals and the process requires a very small amount of space. Sub contract machining companies enable you to get EDM done according to the required specifications quickly and easily through their services. They charge a nominal rate for the services but the results will be definitely to your satisfaction.
