Seniors who live alone at home may face many problems. It includes falling down the stairs or not finding medications when need be. You can decide whether your loved one is safe living at home or needs help from Live in Care Las Vegas Nevada. If your loved one is healthy enough to live alone then make sure your house is perfect for him or her. Here are the 6 things to ensure your loved one’s safety at home.

1. Put Handrails on Stairs & in the Bathtub

Slipping is quite common for seniors with limited mobility. Staircases and shower needs handrails for extra support. Handrails may help your loved one to keep his or her balance while bathing. It may give seniors something to hold onto in the bathtub. You can put a bathmat in the tub to help seniors to prevent slips and falls. There should be sturdy railings on the stairway to prevent falls. Senior with limited mobility often struggles to maintain their balance. Handrails may provide seniors the perfect help when walking on the stairs. Make sure to put handrails on both sides of the stairwell. You can install a stair lift if necessary which is a great safety for seniors.

2. Install More Light bulbs

You can make sure each room is well lit so your loved one may walk around the house in the dark. Night vision gets weaker at an older age, so put more lighting throughout the house for your loved one’s safety. Adding nightlights to hallways, stairs, or rooms at night is also a good idea to ensure safe walking. You can place automatic lights in case seniors are unable to reach the light switch.

3. Check Smoke Detectors

Check the smoke detectors in the house and change the batteries when the need arises. Put a carbon monoxide detector as well to prevent toxic gasses. Place a fire extinguisher in your house as accidents might happen. Teach your loved one how to use an extinguisher in the house. Cooking may cause a fire in the house and your loved one should get prepared to put one out.

4. Medicines should be Within Reach

The cabinets in the kitchen should be at an appropriate height for seniors to reach. If the medicines are at a difficult place then it may cause your loved one problem in an emergency. Place a step stool if it's easier for seniors to hop on it and get what they want from the cabinets. Make sure the step stool does not wobble because your loved one may fall off of it. Try to put daily items in places that are easy to get to and do not need any equipment to access.

5. Buy Them a Cell Phone for an Emergency

If your loved one lives alone then phones are necessary if there is an accident or they need to call for help. Get your loved one a cell phone in case something happens when they are out of reach or can't find a landline. Placing an alert system can be a better choice if seniors are unable to operate a cell phone. An emergency alert system can be the life saver in an emergency.
