Circumvent Netflix Blockade Using A VPN

Netflix is the biggest phenomena in video streaming since YouTube. The impact of Netflix is so severe that the DVD industry is witnessing less sales since Netflix came into business. They have almost every film, every TV show and live sports on the planet and watching them on PC, laptop or smartphones is so easy. Yes, it is not free but then, you can't get everything for free. Moreover, the charges are not humongous and for a monthly fee, you get to watch whatever you want, whenever you want.

However, Netflix has a content access policy which states that due to certain reasons, they will allow access to certain contents only to the citizens of a certain country. This means, if a TV show is marked accessible only for the Americans, the British wouldn't get to watch it. This sounds fair enough and logical. However, the problem starts when we consider how Netflix judges the nationality of a user.

For Netflix, the nationality of a user is simply which country he is trying to access the content. This can lead to annoying circumstances. For example, my British friend is a verified and authentic user of Netflix from UK and all the UK-only films and TV shows are accessible to him. One fine day, he decided to take a holiday in Mauritius but being a TV addict, carried the laptop with him. Now, sitting on his bed, in a cosy Mauritius hotel room, he tries to access his TV shows and guess what? Netflix has blocked his access because now he has a Mauritian IP address and for Netflix, he is a Mauritian. Netflix wouldn't consider anything else and my poor friend must wait till he returns to UK to catch up with his favourite TV series. The question is, how to get Netflix, UK especially when travelling abroad or out of the country. Thankfully, the answer is not difficult.

VPN is the simple and straightforward answer. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it creates a layer between the user and the Netflix server. Instead of the IP or location of the user, it presents the VPN server’s IP and location. Now, if the VPN server is located in UK, the Netflix server would sense a UK client is trying to access the content and would happily unblock the content, without realising that the real client is sitting oceans away.
