The 2014 SRT Viper - A Sports Marvel to Behold
Posted: Feb 28, 2014
The 2014 SRT Viper is an impressive piece of machinery. In fact, this year’s model is a lot friendlier and more refined than any other Viper on the market, and for this year the Viper gets an all new, limited-edition Viper TA.
This is the car that is made for the track, whether it's the base SRT model, or the impressive limited production TA model, where there are only 159 production models made for this year. Overall, the Viper is sharp and more ferocious than any of the prior versions. When you see this baby on the street, you think low, sleek, long and muscular. The Viper looks every bit the super car it is, and intends on being. Inside drivers find the cabin luxurious and elegant with tech packages that push the meaning of high-tech.
Nothing to want under the hood either. With 640-horsepower and a 600 pound-foot 8.4 V-10 engine, this baby will out drive any other beast on the market. It delivers the most torque of any sports car engine in the world, and is reflected in the 0 to 60 lift within three seconds. The stock aluminum engine bay-spanning X brace of prior years has now been swapped for a carbon-fiber piece that takes less than 12 seconds to reach the 100 mph mark and has a top speed of 206 mph. Transmission comes in a standard six-speed manual.
The Viper handles beautifully both in a straight stretch and on those hazardous turns. It has wonderful stability and traction control which allows for yaw and slip angle control, allowing you to take on any track you want. The cabin is very roomy, which is surprising for a low to the ground coupe. Still, the SRT can accommodate drivers up to 6’7". This means there is plenty of room within its confines for most drivers. The seats are both comfortable and adjustable, but surprisingly so are the steering wheel and pedals. This gives the driver the best fit possible. The ride quality is decent, especially for a sports car, and there is also a fair amount of cargo space although slightly odd shaped.
The SRT model is the base viper and comes in an advanced aerodynamics body, equipped with carbon-fiber front splitters and rear spoiler that make anyone look good on the road. For those who want to add a little more "oomph" to the sportiness of this vehicle, there are wheel and tire options appropriate for any racetrack environment. The new 2014 SRT comes with two driver selectable suspension settings called Soft Track or Rough Track. When speaking of suspension it should be mentioned that the new suspension has also been tweaked with new springs and anti-roll bars, making it a lot more track-friendly.
Gas mileage still leaves something to be desired, yet drivers don’t seem to be too concerned with getting more miles for the gallon, especially if they have to sacrifice speed for fuel efficiency. The gas mileage here is not the best, as the Viper gets 12 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway.
In as far as safety goes, the 2014 SRT Viper, like most small sports coupes, are skipped by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Despite the lack of testing, manufacturers believe the Viper to be as safe as most modern coupes, especially because it is equipped with a full set of airbags, anti-lock brakes and traction control. All models do have a backup camera available for added safety.
