Innovative Ways to Teach Children to Read
Posted: Jul 12, 2017
Mainstream literacy is one of the modern world’s greatest achievements. But with such high rates of literacy the question becomes how do we keep the rates as they are or improve them? The answer: teaching children to read.
Teaching children to read can be a very hard and frustrating process for multiple reasons. Not only is teaching large classes of children for seven hours a day, five days a week hard work for a teacher but it can be frustrating for a child as well. For a class to work a teacher must pay attention to their students and must be able to help their students with any questions they might have, however with large classes a teacher is at a disadvantage. Either the teacher half listens to the entire group or the teacher only listens fully to one student thus leaving the rest to their own devices until the teacher moves onto the next person. Leaving a child to their own devices can be bad for the child’s learning process as they grow bored and no longer interested in the material, it is easy for such a child to distract others or be unable to refocus once they are able to speak to the teacher and continue with their work.
A good way to counter this is by devising a program where the students can learn from each other not solely the teacher so that even while the teacher is busy with others the students can still be mentally stimulated. Programs that keep their students mentally stimulated even while the teacher is not interacting with them usually include an activity where the students can do something on their own, such as copying words or working with a partner.
The best way to teach reading is still a debated subject and there are many studies going on in the area. Some say that the best ways are to specifically instruct your students in the major parts of reading, such as phonics and comprehension, others say that repetition and memorization are the best.
However the best ways to teach reading and easy ways to teach beginning readers aren’t necessarily the same.
When one picks a program for their class or children to follow it should be a mix of both easy ways of teaching reading and the best ways of teaching reading. The program should combine all the skills required in learning to read as well as the top ways to teach kids the ability to read . Picking the most fun and effective program is essential for optimal reading comprehension for the children. If a teacher or parent chooses the wrong technique it could mean the students are missing out on a less frustrating and more nurturing method which would be easier for them and make them love reading more, this is why it is very important when choosing a technique to make sure you have a good one.
