5 Reasons You’re Not Going To Be Able To Find A New Job In Hong Kong

So many people start the year looking for a new job in Hong Kong. But how many of those people will successfully achieve that goal. Not many actually. Here are some reasons why:

1. You Don’t REALLY Want To Find A New Job

You see others around you moving on to greener pastures and climbing the career ladder. You imagine you "should" find a new job and do the same. But you don’t really "want" to do it. You will never make a job switch until you find the motivation necessary to take action.

  1. You Aren’t Ready For Battle You feel like finding a new job in Hong Kong is extra work, and most people dislike doing extra work. Try to discover a way to make your job search interesting and this will encourage you to carry it out on an ongoing basis. The reality is that in order to land the best available job opportunities, it’s going to be a big battle. As the old army saying goes, "Fail to Prepare. Prepare to Fail". Get ready for war. This is not for the faint-hearted.
  2. You Don’t Know What You Want To Do

Even if you are excited and energised by the prospect of a job search, you need somewhere to focus your efforts. If you don’t spend the necessary time to think about the type of job, responsibilities, type of company and other factors that would define ‘a win’ in the end, then there might be no point in playing the game in the first place. If you don’t know what a "good" job in Hong Kong looks like and what a "great" employer look like it’s difficult to conduct a proactive job search where you focus on the right employers with the right jobs. Finding career happiness becomes as likely as finding a needle in a haystack. Do you really want to leave your career to chance?

4. You’re Scared

Nobody likes rejection, but let’s face it, you’re not going to get another job unless you put yourself out there and risk it. If you’ve already put the right amount of thought into the types of job you would be right for, the roles where you could create value for the company, then you should treat every step of your job search (especially the rejections) as a learning experience. It’s a stepping stone to the right result, not a personal judgment on you.

5. There’s Always Tomorrow

If you don’t want to begin looking until your resume and LinkedIn profile are "perfect" then you might never start. There’s no point in perfect if perfect takes forever. Better to fail fast. If you’re waiting for your life to slow down or your job in Hong Kong to become less stressful, you are setting yourself up to never start your Hong Kong job search. Things will likely never get better. You are unhappy for a reason and things won’t change until you change them. Waiting for life to improve is an excuse.
