Modern chaise lounges provide a stunning way to enhance the decor in almost any room with sophisticated and sleek pieces that don’t compromise comfort one iota. Part chair, part daybed, these unique designs have ancient roots, but are available in distinctly modern styles these days, making them beautiful inclusions in almost any decorating theme.

Modern chaise lounges trace their roots back to early Egypt where they, in quite rudimentary form, served as places for ancient rulers to rest their weary bones. This unique design continued to evolve over the centuries with frontrunners to today’s modern chaise lounges evident in Greek art, Roman manuscripts and even relics from early England. By the Victorian era, elaborate chaise lounges were found in parlours, sitting rooms, lounges and bedrooms alike across Europe and beyond.

While the concept that evolved to become the modern chaise, lounge originated centuries in the past, the French are credited with moving the idea forward. In fact, three main types of luxuriously upholstered chaise lounges were popularised by the French:

  • The duchesse brisee – This is a chaise lounge that is separated into two parts that can be brought together.
  • The Recamier – This type of chaise lounge has two raised ends, but no armrests. To modern eyes, it may more closely resemble a narrow daybed.
  • The meridienne – With its high head rest, built-in footrest and armrest on one side, this design remains among the most popular to this day.

While modern chaise lounges and chaise lounge sofa beds boast today’s advanced construction methods to ensure enduring beauty and performance, their designs still harken back to bygone time. These designs may, for example, boast simple, but elegant colours and accents. Some modern chaise lounges may feature ornate design patterns, intricate carvings and luxurious upholstery to add a sense of sophistication and style to any room. While some variation in style most certainly exists, one of the most popular chaise lounge designs today features a combination of cotton and leather upholstery. A Chesterfield-style backrest with high elbow rests, much like a meridienne, is highly favoured.

Chaise lounges make an excellent addition to any home’s décor. These pieces are best placed in areas where their beauty can be appreciated and their comfort enjoyed. Many interior designers and do-it-yourself home décor buffs opt for this unique piece of furniture to add elegance to formal livings rooms and entry parlours. They are also ideal for use in bedrooms where they can provide exceptional comfort and relaxation at the end of long days. They also make perfect additions to home libraries and sunrooms, since they provide a luxurious spot on which to curl up and read a good book. Modern chaise lounges make a unique addition to any home’s décor. While the design technically dates back centuries, it’s never gone out of style.
