Mount Everest, rising 8,850m (29,035ft) above sea level reigns as the highest mountain on Earth. Since the first ascent in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, reaching the summit of Everest has been considered one of the greatest achievements in Mountaineering.

For most people, Everest is a once in a lifetime experience because of the costs, the time invested, etc. So if you’re considering giving it a shot — get some serious education and reading first. The challenges are formidable, the winds brutal, the lack of oxygen causes hallucinations and the slightest of mistakes can be deadly.

Volkmar Guido Hable, author of the New York Times bestseller INTO THE COLD and COLD ADVENTURES as well as COLD EXPEDITIONS INTO THE AFGHAN MOUNTAINS, and featured on 60 Minutes Sports, gives a recount of Everest’s deadliest year, the events, the people and the different minds and souls who for whatever reason, mostly not understandable to the outside world and even less to their families.

There are those mountaineers who actually climb up by their own physical and mental power. And then there are those who are dragged up literally by their Sherpas and mountain guides, while ignoring the fact that no one in an emergency in the death zone (above 7500 meters) had ever been rescued.

Volkmar Guido Hable’s account of his ascent of Mt Everest in May 1996 contains reflections, observations and a detailed description of the events during deadliest year of all climbing seasons on Mt. Everest.

The book is focused on a series of interviews with Volkmar Guido Hable as well as conversations and interviews with climbers and Sherpas from other groups.

The exhibition Attention Economy with the book presentation will take place from May 28 to June 9, 2017 in Miami, the Miami University Bookstore. Details to follow.

Dr. Volkmar Guido Hable was trained as a physicist and geoscientist and holds a Ph.D. in Geosciences and a B.S. in Agriculture and Agronomics. After graduation, however, he took a slightly different career path and entered the financial world.
