How to Learn Chinese: Beginners Guide

Chinese language learning is becoming the new fad in globally. The growing economy, the job opportunities and the liking towards the language is bringing the world closer to Chinese. 1. Understand the language

  • It is significant that you know the basis of Chinese language. Unlike other languages, this language does not have separate words for a concept, but one character summarizes the entire concept. For Example, Zi- means do as one pleases. It is one character explaining the concept.
  • The language is based on intonations and pauses. There are basically 4 tones to understand. So you must pay attention to the tones of the words said.
  • There is no particular grammar in Chinese. It does not have conjugations or tenses or genders to ponder on.
  • The most important part is embracing the language. If there is no love for the language learning becomes difficult.

2. Get to learn routine phrases

  • There is no short cut to this. All you do is learn two or three phrases daily and accommodate in your daily conversation. It could be n? h?o-Hello, y?- One or

n? jiào shénme míngzi- meaning what is your name (literal meaning being 'you called what name’). So use these words in your daily conversation and slowly develop vocabulary to it.

  • Even when you Learn Chinese, you must have your own pocket dictionary created by you. Words that you are comfortable with, it must have the pronunciation, the meaning in your language etc. this will help you know Chinese language better.

3. Use of multimedia

Thanks to the advent of internet, getting multimedia to learn Chinese is no big deal. You can get hands on Chinese Pod, watch movies in Chinese, listen to Chinese songs etc. Do not extend yourself to more than 15 minutes of listening. For after 15 minutes of listening it simply remains a hearing phenomenon. So keep restricted to 15 minutes, and possible get the subtitles too.

4. Set your target

Set a target words for yourself. Tell that you should be learning 40 words a week. It could comprise of your favorites. You could learn the names of cities first, then the greetings, the numbers, the names of the cuisines, names of fruits, vegetables, general questions and so on. But the important thing is to use it too. There is no point in simply learning and not using it. You will tend to forget then.

5. Friendship does it all

Try hanging around with natives. Chinese people love to help who wish to learn Chinese. The more you converse, better it is for you. The more you listen; you will pay attention to the tone and so on.
