Aadi Perukku – Ensures financial stability

Aadi Perukku is the monsoon festival that is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil Month Aadi. This festival is a way of respect towards water and prime role in our life. Tamil people use this day as an opportunity to thank Mother Cauvery, the river which has helped in sustaining life in Tamil Nadu. So it is celebrated near river basins, water tanks, lakes and wells etc.

Why is it celebrated?

Aadi perukku also known as Pathinettam Perukku because eighteen is signified by pathinettu and perukku signified by rising which is the river water level rises. Water is released from all the reservoirs across the state on this day. Most of the rivers will be overflowing during this period. Peoples celebrated this overflow of water by assembling and pray to Gods on the river banks.

How is it celebrated?

Aadi Perukku Ritual starts on early in the morning and the women offer prayers and express gratitude to Mother Cauvery. Special Pooja’s are done in temple and the people pray Mother Cauvery and Varuna Bhagavan for good harvest and constant supply of water. Young girls who do this Aadi Perukku Pooja by offering Kaadholai, Karugamani and Kaapparisi on this day are said to be blessed with good husband. Similarly, newly married couples pray on the river for a lasting relationship and fertility. During this festival women float flowers, turmeric and a yellow thread along with mango leaves in the river.Women’s sing folk song of Aadi Perukku are the major attractions during this festival.
