What is the single biggest hurdle that anyone willing to migrate to a country like Australia must overcome? Believe it or not it is to do with the English language. The biggest challenge in getting your visa processed is providing a good enough score at one of the English language proficiency tests like IELTS or PTE Academic.

The large number of training institutes in every small town or big city in Australia proves how desperate most students are to get a good score in their exam and provide a much-needed push to their visa applications. A small difference in the scores can result in your visa application being denied!

Till a few years ago IELTS was the preferred exam taken by visa aspirants but now the PTE Academic Test is providing tough competition to IELTS. Students disillusioned by repeated failures at IELTS or unhappy at the so called human bias in the IELTS have turned to PTE Academic in large numbers.

If you are looking to give the PTE Academic Test let us tell you some sure ways of excelling at it.

1. Don’t make silly computer related mistakes

You will often hear from shocked students that they scored very highly in Reading, Writing and Listening but failed miserably in the Speaking section. Simple things like how a mic is placed in front of the mouth can impact your score. It’s important to be calm and composed on the exam day. Make sure you place your mic properly – not too close to your lips and sit straight breathing easily. If you are nervous or your heart is beating rapidly it will definitely reflect in the way you speak.

Similarly, don’t pause for more than 3 seconds while giving your spoken response. If you do, the microphone will just shut down and your answer will not be recorded. If you finish your response earlier just go to the next question. Don’t wait for the timer to end.

Keep these things in mind and don’t give the computer any reason to deduct your marks.

2. Use templates smartly

A lot of people think that they can get away with memorizing one essay or one re-tell lecture or one describe image template. This is not right! You should definitely have some templates but only because having a template saves you time and gives you a well-defined way of organising your response.

If you try to fit one template everywhere you will definitely trip in some questions and when you do your score will suffer. Therefore, use templates smartly and for the right reason. Try to have 2 or 3 templates for each question type and know where to use them.

3. Follow a plan

If you have given IELTS or PTE before and received a low score because of poor core skills such as pronunciation, vocabulary or grammar then you need to have a proper plan to improve these areas. Make it a point to spend some time every day working on your core skills.

This doesn’t necessarily have to take a lot of time out of your busy schedule. You can do this while travelling to and from work. Just read an article on your mobile or watch an English language video and try to summarize it in your own words. Note down any difficult words or their pronunciations. Even 10 minutes a day spent like this will make a huge difference to your PTE Academic Test score.

5. Don’t confuse yourself with too much study material

Just because there are ten thousand PTE videos on YouTube does not mean you have to watch each one of those. Instead of taking on too much study material spend quality time on a few selected resources that are of high quality. Don’t always go for cheap and free especially when something as important as your PTE Academic Test score is at stake.

Only spend time on materials which are accompanied with detailed explanations. Your goal is to learn not just to attempt questions and tally answers.

6. Get help if needed

After preparing for a while you will know where you stand. If you think you might need help from a teacher or an expert please go for it. You will be spending hundreds on test fees and it will all be a waste if you fail to get your score just because you didn’t give yourself the chance to consult an expert.

If you have given IELTS or PTE before and failed more than once to get your desired score then it is an indication that you should now consult a PTE training expert. There are several courses and learning options available on the Internet. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive option, it just has to meet your requirement.

7. Have confidence

Last but not the least have confidence in your abilities. Look back at the challenges that you have faced in life so far and successfully overcome. Don’t underestimate yourself! Sometimes it is not our lack of ability but a lack of preparation or a lack of right learning resources because of which we fail to achieve the outcome. Learn from your past mistakes but have confidence that with the right plan and right support you will definitely achieve your goal.
