There isn't anything like a dog if you're looking for loyalty, love and affection. Dogs make wonderful pets for the whole family, or they can provide companionship for those living on their own. To provide your dog with the life they deserve, read on.

Make your home dog-proof. Check your whole home to be sure it is safe prior to bringing a dog home. Hide medications and chemicals, cover your trash, and put food where he can't get to it. Some houseplants are toxic and need to be kept out of your dog's reach.

Hugs are great, but avoid kisses. Kissing a dog might seem cute, but they have dirty mouths. Remember that dogs use their tongues to clean themselves, and they like to eat garbage and drink out of the toilet. It's a folk tale that dogs have cleaner mouths than humans. This statement is most definitely not true.

When the dog does something right, be sure to lavish praise on him or her. After all, your goal is for your dog to know when it is doing something good. This is called positive reinforcement.

Purchase or construct a dog house if your dog must stay outside when the weather is cold. If his feet are wet, extreme temperatures can be stressful and bad for his health. Keep your dog safe from precipitation and winds by providing him with a place that is spacious, with a dry floor.

When you are getting dog food for your pet, don't try to save money and get whatever is cheapest. Over the course of the dogs life he will be much healthier if you stick to high quality food with plenty of nutritional value. Though better brands cost more, it is worth it to know your dog is receiving the nutrients it needs.

Train your dog how to properly walk when on a leash. Your pet shouldn't be ahead of you, behind you, or anywhere that isn't by your side. They should also answer correctly when you say "heel". This will keep him safe, and it'll make walks more enjoyable. Even if you're using loose leashes for walking here and there, make sure the dog understands this command.

Avoid leaving your pup outside all day. While this is what many people do, dogs require socialization with people and/or other animals. Especially if it's only one dog, it can get very lonely. In addition to the socializing need, you should not leave a dog to fend for himself in heavy rainstorms or very cold weather. Bring the dog indoors until the inclement weather passes.

Take some time to trim your dog's paw beds during every grooming session. This can help prevent mats. Prior to trimming it, straighten the fur using a comb. If this process is something with which you are uncomfortable, have a professional groomer do the job.

A lot goes into owning and caring for a dog. It involves much more than just playing with it a little each day and making sure it gets fed. You have to know how to properly take care of a dog. Doing so will give you more enjoyable years with them.
