Capturing raw emotions during a wedding photo shoot

The beauty of photographs is that they capture and immortalize the beautiful, fleeting moments in our lives.

For photographers, photography is the opportunity to creatively capture the unique stories of their subjects, and highlighting their personalities as well.

But perhaps what makes photography beautiful is the way it helps immortalize raw emotions.

A toddler dabbing a piece of cake on his little brother’s nose, a mother-to-be holding her belly as her husband stands next to her, and an old couple laughing, without a care in the world. All of these are a few examples of the wonderful way photography helps make fleeting moments last forever.

So if you’re preparing for a wedding photo shoot, it simply isn’t about capturing the gorgeous dress the bride will be wearing. It’s about capturing the love the couple share with each other. And it’s all about the way you capture that love on lens.

Ignore the First Few Shots

As a beginner, it will take you time to get to the professional level where you can easily shoot beautiful portraits in the first few shots. But the first few shots should be left for getting to know your client. Remember that weddings take a lot of planning so by the time you get to the designated location, you will see the couple stressed out.

The first step you should take is to move around and talk to your clients after every shot. When they finally start relaxing, you will be able to take better pictures. When you’re reviewing the portraits later, you will notice how the pictures are much better.

Explore the Location Before the Wedding

Make sure to take a look at the venue a day or two before the wedding. This will give you time to prepare your equipment and analyze the best areas to shoot. If the wedding will held outdoors, you will need to work on shooting in harsh sunlight.

If the venue is inside, take a look at the best areas where you can get proper lighting. This will also help you understand and analyze the type of equipment you will need to bring.

Engage Your Client

For some shots, try to engage your client. If you want to capture the couple laughing/giggling, then talk to them while photographing. Add a little humor to the shoot and you’ll capture them at their happiest moments!
