Bollards are an essential part of our modern cities, and they can be used in many different ways. We are used to seeing them, in applications, such as pedestrian protection at roadsides, security solutions near buildings and access denial. However, some people may not be aware that bollards can be functional and aesthetically pleasing. There is a vast selection of bollards to suit a variety of needs, and it can be hard to make an informed decision.

The Uses of Bollards:

We’ve already touched on this, but bollards are usually used in the following five roles, they are traffic calming, traffic management, controlling access, adding security and for aesthetic appeal. Granted the looks of the bollard are usually a secondary condition at best, but they will be important to image conscious businesses.

Cast Iron Bollards Manufacturing Materials:

Bollards can be made from many different types of material depending upon the role they will be used in and the budget available. Here are two of the more common material choices that may be encountered.

Cast Iron Bollards:

These have considerable tensile strength, and a variety of additives are used to change the properties of the finished bollard. This will change the iron bollard from being a brittle structure that will snap, into a flexible structure that will bend. As you may imagine, this makes a modern cast iron bollard very useful in the event of a vehicular collision. The kinetic force exerted by the car is nullified by bollard far more effectively. This also makes them a good choice for businesses that are concerned with "ram raid" style robberies. The cast iron bollard also looks fantastically understated and adds a touch of class to a property. These bollards are well suited to areas, such as retail parks, schools, stadiums, residential roads and well developed city infrastructure projects.

Mild Steel Bollards:

This is probably the chief rival to the cast iron bollard, but it’s actually a radically different product in some ways. A cast iron bollard is a fixed structure that is effective but doesn’t allow for any flexibility. A mild steel bollard can be utilitarian, or it can be galvanised and finished in a dizzying range of attractive designs. Where the mild steel bollard differs most is the different ways it can be installed and used. Aside from the typical submerged permanent fixing, these bollards can also be removable. This is a great option, for site managers that need to allow and restrict access to a particular area.
