Another important point is that dyes are widely used in cosmetic industry. Actually, dyes provide the actual color required in the cosmetic products such as lipsticks, nail paints, blusher, color palettes etc.

Pigment colors are used to achieve a perfect color shade in the products.

We all know that beauty trends come and go. Now, the trend of super glossy lips has been replaced by color-rich matte lipsticks. So, what is behind this change? Why is matte creating revolution?

Nowadays, we find matte lipsticks and they are in fashion. Let us explore the making of a matte lipstick.

Lipstick generally contains wax, oils, antioxidants and emollients.

  • Wax – It provides the structure and hardness to the lipstick. In general, lipsticks may contain several waxes but almost all lipsticks always include carnauba wax because of its’ high melting point. Other waxes you might find are beeswax, candelilla or ozocerite.
  • Oils – Usually, various oils and fats are also used in lipsticks, such as olive oil, mineral oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, and petrolatum.

Lipsticks get their colors from a variety of pigments and lake dyes. Pink lipsticks, are made by mixing titanium dioxide and red shades.

When adding pigments to lipstick you can start at around 2% total weight. That would be 2 grams of pure dye pigment to 90 grams of base. The easiest way to add it would be to mix it will with castor oil and then add it to your melted base.

Matte Lipsticks contain more filling agents like silica or mica and less emollients. In matte, large ratio of pigment powder loaded into it compared to a typical lipstick. It is a fact that a matte lip can make everyone look more glamorous in pictures. Usually, in matte, the strong color can guide the eyes towards the screen. Pigment overload is another reason for the matte color to stay. These color colorants are using new polymers that create a comfortable, long lasting film. So, you do not have to reapply repeatedly, it holds the color for longer hours.

So, matte is indeed brining revolution. Compared to glossy lipsticks, flat pigment stays the longest. Secondly, they do not stain on cups. On the flip side, matte lipstick longevity means you will find colors that you can live with all day.
