When was the last time you thought real hard about your headache? Or maybe about what happens when you experience a muscle spasm? Perhaps not so often! However, understanding these aspects hold a very crucial value in terms of keeping us healthy and fit. Possessing a thorough knowledge of the human anatomy does not guarantee a win over diseases, which is why an understanding of the bodily mechanism is also quite important. Thus, the role of bio-medical sciences in human society is unmatched.

In past 2 decades, the field of bio-medical sciences has taken a huge leap and the major credit for that goes to the awareness & education spread by few Bio-medical science colleges in India. This article discusses the scope of Bio-medical sciences & throws some light on the brilliant career prospects.

Academic Scope:

The course for Bio-medical science covers a wide array of human anatomy related aspects. The students who opt for the program are trained to gain an exceptional proficiency in the areas such as:

  1. Physiology

  2. Bio-chemistry

  3. Nutrition

  4. Food Sciences

An in-depth knowledge of the above-mentioned areas is imparted onto students. As a result of the training which students receive, they acquire an immersive understanding of the mechanism of human anatomy along with the related aspects such as food and nutrition. There are only a handful of Nutrition and dietetics colleges in India which provide the right kind of education & exposure required to succeed in this field.

Career Prospects:

There has been an evident upsurge in the bio-medical science field which can be observed by looking at the added sophistication in the healthcare industry. A deeper understanding of bio-sciences has opened-up many new vistas to disease treatment & prevalence. Due to the mufti-faceted education that students get while pursuing a course in bio-medical sciences enables them in taking multiple career opportunities. Some of the prominent roles which a person with a degree in Bio-medical sciences can pursue:

Bio-medical Scientist:

The role of a bio-medical scientist requires very strong analytical skills and abundant practical laboratory experience. Bio-medical scientists are responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of treatments. In order to do so, they are required to carry out a range of laboratory and scientific tests on tissue samples and fluids. Their findings play a crucial role in helping clinicians diagnose and treat diseases. There are different sub-streams in which a bio-medical scientist can specialize in, which are namely Infection sciences, blood sciences & cellular sciences.

Forensic Scientist:

A career as a Forensic Scientist demands a bit more than just a sound knowledge of the bio-medical sciences. It requires a very inquisitive mind, communication skills & a very precise-and-methodical approach towards work. Granted that all the career fields require these traits, but they are especially crucial when it comes to being a forensic scientist. Because a Forensic Scientist is required to present a well-researched, spot-on and unbiased scientific evidence which can be used in criminal cases in court.
