Oil Painting is a beautiful artistic medium popularized by the Renaissance artists. It is admired for its flexible painting techniques, expressiveness and durability. Oil paintings allow an artist to add more variations in colors, shades and textures. Different colors are made by blending the pigments with drying oils such as linseed, poppy seed oil, walnut oil and safflower oil. These paintings are renowned for their appealing sheen and a marvelous 3D effect.

Some of the most inspirational and timeless works of art have been created by using the Oil Painting techniques. Here are the different types of Oil Painting:

Glazing

Most artists use the Glazing technique in which multiple layers or ‘grazes’ of pigments are applied to the canvas successively to create beautiful colors, texture and shades. Usually, the multiple layers of colors are painted over finely refined charcoal drawings and sketches. The Glazing technique is highly impressionist and realistic with the use of bright and intense colors.

Alla Prima

This type of painting is also called ‘wet-on-wet’ method. It means applying different colors in one continuous session while the paint remains wet on the canvas. It is a favorite among Oil Painting artists as it allows the painter to add variations and to manipulate the painting before it dries up. Many contemporaries also prefer a combination of Glazing and Alla Prima techniques to add depth to their art works.

Knife Painting

Knife Painting is done with the help of a painting knife instead of a brush. It is an extremely expressive technique as a knife can be used in multiple ways, vertically and horizontally to create specific patterns. It can produce both light and heavy strokes giving an almost three dimensional effect.

Sgraffito

It is a conventional technique of Oil Painting. A knife, pencil or some other tool is used to draw on wet paint revealing the bare canvas or a layer of paint lying beneath. Oil Paint is ideal for this type of painting because of its slow drying properties. It allows an artist to create detailed line work carefully and expressively.
