According to the Chinese Zodiac Calendar, every animal sign of a total of 12 has an entire year to its cycle. The year 2017 is the year of the "Rooster". This oriental idea along is one of the Chinese borrowings like the Chinese New Year which has gotten infused into the fiber of international culture. Making use of the universality of this factoid, a particular designer has come forth to design a wonderful pendant embodying this Zodiac cycle. The asset was anonymously crafted and was one of the items in the Royal Danish Treasury. The piece was called to a curtain raise at auctions recently, and that sent home jewelers with nuggets of ideas to recraft and reimagine it.

The Chicken-in-Egg Pendant: The original egg pendant is a semi-fist-size golden egg hanging from a long gold chain. The pendant can be broken from the middle by a patch lock. The top half of the egg holds an adorable, yet very life-like imitation of an egg inside. A hemispherical yolk protrudes out from this half with from a seat of white which indicates the albumen. The lower half of the egg is however kept hollow to make room for a big, fat gold rooster. The rooster is 3X3cm in diameter and pretty heavy for its solid gold build. However, what’s striking in that miniature artefact is the detail of feathers all over the bird. The locket from the royal treasury of Copenhagen comes encased in an ivory eggshell which is the last piece of the ensemble.

The Rooster in Egg Pendant: Modern designers have remodeled it in many different styles and that makes the inside content still a surprise. The neatest of them all is the rooster in egg pendant. The pendant hangs on a 28" gold ball chain. Like the original piece, this one can be opened from the middle by a hinge. The loop that holds the egg to the chain is inlaid with 9 diamonds which is the first distinctive mark in the new piece. Inside rests a silver chicken which is retrievable from the depth of the hollow by a silver chain that keeps it tethered to the top of the lid. The surprise doesn’t end in the detailing of the chicken from its beak to diamond eyes though. The chicken sits on a small twig nest which can be opened by moving the chicken upward. Inside the nest sits three golden eggs.
