If you want to learn how to defend yourself properly, the first thing you have to do is develop inner confidence. No matter how well you train under an experienced martial artist, or a combat trainer; your confidence is your first line of defense.

Here are 5 simple rules which you should know if you want to learn self defense at any level -

#1 - Never Underestimate Your Opponent

The first rule is never to underestimate any opponent. A small, weak person with a knife is much more dangerous than a huge unarmed person. While your self defence training will prepare your body and mind to coordinate accurately in any given situation; underestimating your opponent is the worst mistake one can make! If you are being attacked, make sure you carefully study your opponent's features, behaviors, and traits; and try and estimate their next actions and movements very carefully at all times.

#2 - Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Even when people learn self defense for several years, situation awareness is a born instinct. It is a primary human instinct that will save your life during a crisis. If you are in a familiar place, try using the safer roads or lanes which will deter the attackers. Never try running blindly unless you know the area well, since you may be running into a trap or into a corner where the attackers would be at an advantage.

#3 - Always Know Your Personal Limitations

The confidence you gain after proper self defence training is a very elevating feeling; and this is mostly a positive outcome. However, it is also important to know your personal limitations. Even a strong person may not be a physical match for a group of several attacker, and it boils down to wise judgment. These are situations where presence of mind and sharp thinking are much more important than skill. physical strength, or agility.

#4 - Never Try Fancy Moves

Martial arts in media, and to learn self defense in real life are very different. You can't be an action star and sue stylized kicks and punches when being attacked. Always use the simplest techniques for maximum impact with minimal effort. If you have an umbrella, or some other object you can use, try applying it with full effect. Even a strong handbag or a key can be a great defensive tool if you keep a calm head!

#5 - Keep Yourself Fit and Healthy

When people learn self defense, it is usually a few simple combination of tactful movements and innovated strikes that help prevent an attack. However, keeping fit and healthy is a personal matter. If you need to run away from a situation, or jump over a wall; your personal fitness will have a much more important role to play. Exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy diet to keep your body active and capable of defending yourself.
