An electric scooter can be your reliable, environmentally friendly mode of transportation for short trips around the block. You want to make sure that it will run efficiently for as long as you will need it, of course, so it makes sense to know how to take care of its battery life. A high-quality electric scooter is powered by a lithium battery that you can charge using regular household current. A full charge can usually be achieved in four to six hours, and the battery’s charge life can be up to 800 charges. The battery charge of an electric bicycle in the UK can usually let you go between 40 to 100 miles depending on the terrain. Here are a few tips to help you extend the battery life of your electric scooter:

  • No need to drain the battery – It is believed that rechargeable batteries of electronic devices must be fully discharged or drained before they are charged to optimize their life span. However, that only applies with nickel cadmium batteries, which have a charge memory. Hence, an electric bicycle with a lithium battery does not have to be completely discharged before you charge them again.
  • Practice proper care of the battery – The smallest actions, like periodic maintenance and regular checks, can already go a long way in extending the battery life of your electric scooter. If you find the lights dimming or the horn and starter sound weak, it is time to charge the battery to 100 percent. Consider recharging the battery if you intend to use it after two or more weeks of inactivity, and store the scooter at room temperature, away from extreme heat conditions.
  • Invest in a battery tender – If you do not frequently use your electric bicycle in the UK, consider getting a battery tender, which helps keep the battery in optimal condition. The device plugs into your standard AC outlet to transfer power in amps to the battery to keep it operational, even over extensive periods of inactivity.
  • Clean the battery – An electric bicycle in the UK can have a removable battery, which you can safely remove for inspection and cleaning. Check for any signs of corrosion and use a wire brush to remove them. A dry cloth will suffice in removing filings and dirt from the terminals.
