Ticks are the worst kind of parasite to ever meet your dog. They cling to your dog and ruin their lives, including being able to transmit almost 14 different type of diseases! Getting rid of ticks is one of the most important things you can do for your dog and in order to do that, you need to be prepared to go the extra mile. And not only do they affect and infect your dog, the diseases can pass onto you as well. It’s probably best to just save everyone from the trouble of ticks and get rid of them as soon as you spot them.

  • Oral Medication: Obviously the most popular and best recommended way is to help your dog with the tick problem. Given to your dog once a month, the medication needs to be prescribed by your vet and given regularly.
  • Ointments: This is another great way to protect your dog from ticks, by applying directly to the skin that allows it to spread over the skin and kill ticks and other parasites for almost up to a month. Like the oral medication, make sure you get a prescription from your doctor first.
  • Tick Sprays: Much like the ointments, you can use sprays that you put directly onto your dog’s coat. It’s best to apply this before your dog goes outdoors, so that it protects his coat and skin from ticks. Think of it like a force field, keeping everything out while your dog enjoys himself in the outdoors.
  • Shampoos: As you can imagine, there are shampoos designed specifically for ticks and you can use these during their baths to make sure that you get the ticks and protect their
skin and coat from further intruders.

  • Lawn Treatments: This method isn’t applied to your dog as much as it’s applied to how you can help your dog. Make sure that your lawn is sprayed regularly with medicines that are specifically to keep ticks and other parasites away. Obviously you should not let your dog get their paws on these medicines because it can affect them badly as well.
  • Safety Checks: When your dog returns to the house after an adventure outside, make sure you do a thorough check to make sure there are no ticks. Armpits, inside the ears, between toes and around his neck are places you must check. You might miss it, but keep a close eye out.

Whatever medicinal and chemical methods you’re planning to use, make sure that you consult your vet first, because everything is specifically designed to suit your dog. And it’s important that you don’t get the dosages wrong and you do continue to protect your dog as much as possible.
