Recently at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, the Continental tire company unveiled two tire prototypes that could be as smart as the cars they are attached to! The tires are designed to deliver information to drivers so that they can readily adapt to varying conditions. Electrically conductive rubber compound sensors are ingrained in the tire and are able to monitor tire temperature and tread depth in order to alert the driver if either falls below safety specifications. The system can also detect leaks and warn the driver before the tire becomes flat or a blow-out occurs. Surely Salt Lake City auto insurance providers will need to consider such an addition when calculating the cost of car insurance policies.

Continental also revealed that such tires are able to monitor road conditions, sensing the temperature, wetness and slipperiness of the road surface and delivering that information to the driver, enabling them to consider these factors when braking or taking corners. The second prototype goes a step further, sensing tire pressure and adjusting the amount of tire surface in contact with the road automatically. It is able to employ a mode that automatically lowers tire pressure for more contact with the road in wet conditions, and a higher pressure mode for dry conditions that can result in better usage of fuel.

So what benefit do these tires hold for the average consumer? Well for one thing, the American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that close to eighty percent of cars on the road are being driver with under or over-inflated tires. Not only can this be dangerous, but it can cause your automobile to consume more fuel and place extra load on the engine. Tires also wear out faster when they are under-inflated, causing you to replace them more often due to increased tread wear caused by excessive heat and friction.

If you're wondering how a tire can inflate itself, it's actually quite simple. The system uses the sane air as the braking system, but don't worry, there is a pressure switch include in the circuit to ensure the brakes take priority! A driver control unit is also included with the tires, allowing the driver to select an appropriate tire pressure for different conditions. The tires will provide increased comfort as well as safety for drivers as they can even be adapted to a particular drivers personal preferences. As cars become more and more safe, it is only natural that such features should contribute to the lower cost of car insurance in Salt Lake City. If you decide on such tires for your vehicle, you may want to discuss lowering the cost of your policy with your provider.
