When I first become interested in fly fishing when I was a teenager as soon as I have saved up sufficient enough money, I headed straight to the local shop to purchase some fly-fishing equipments.

Having limited funds was an instant disappointment, as I had not understood how costly fly fishing gear really was. I gave it some thought and determined that, as I was going to be catching really big fish, it would be best buying the biggest items available. So I bought myself a bulky reel, a big rod, some line and flies and lures with really big hooks, after all it would take a big hook to hold the fish I was going to catch. How wrong could I have been?

Fly fishing equipment where size truly does make a difference

Determining upon taking up a new hobby can be a life-changing decision; the new experiences can quickly make the person change the way they spend their spare time. I had exhausted myself by working hard to save enough money, so that I can afford to try my hand at some fishing. I was looking forward to a relaxing morning stroll along the banks of our lake, taking in the fresh morning air, hopefully getting to see the others playing on the edge of the water and then settling down before catching a huge salmon.

Well things don’t always work. I had viewed a fly fishing DVD where I observed many anglers catching many brown trout and a few quite large salmon; after all I was living in a place where fishing was as popular as golf. I was therefore sure that, after a little practice, I would land a sufficient salmon to take home for the family to eat. Sadly I failed, abysmally, regardless how hard I tried I did not get a single bite.

Looking back I can now see that the issue lay in my terrible decision to go large. Even today, while watching fly fishing DVD, catch one of the biggest salmon I have ever seen utilizing the technique with a simple reel and rod, some floating line and the smallest fly I have ever seen. As he removed the fly from the fish mouth, he was utilizing the best size for the fish size that he rarely lost a fish while utilizing it. It just goes to the show that size truly does matter, but less, so if you truly know what you are doing.

Fly Fishing Equipment- the line, the rod and Reel

I now understood that fly fishing equipment is actually precise to the weight of the fish you are trying to catch. Every item of equipment should be of an ideal size, so that they complement each other properly. As a teenager, I had little time to study the art and even less time to hone technique as all I wanted to do was get out there.
