The new Skoda Superb Wagon for sale offers a wealth of safety features, making it an excellent choice for a family vehicle. Most of us end up taking our kids on those quick errands, and many people dread the prospect of taking their children on a quick trip to the store. Not only are you likely to get pestered to buy more than you intended, but you also face the ticking time bomb of a tantrum if you need to queue for more than a minute or two. So, there is a temptation to just leave your kids in the car for a minute or two, but should you ever even contemplate doing it?

It’s Only a Minute or Two:

Many parents have their own time of what is acceptable to leave their child in the car. You may leave your baby for a minute while you collect an older child from school, or leave them while you nip in to pay for something. However, the general rules in Australia are that children should never be left in a car unattended. The penalties vary across states, but the only exception to this rule is if it is more hazardous to remove the children from the vehicle than leave them there. For example, if you are filling up your Skoda Superb car at a petrol station that is busier than a highway, taking two small children across the forecourt could be dangerous. Ideally, in these scenarios, you should either fill up when you don’t have the kids with you or choose a petrol station that allows you to pay at the pump.

The Dangers:

While there are dangers of leaving your children unattended for a short time, a serious danger is when your children are in the vehicle for a longer period. Even on a relatively mild 20º day, inside your car, the temperatures can reach 60º. Research has shown that 75% of this temperature rise occurs in the first five minutes. If the day is hotter, it is even worse. 30º can turn into 70º. Internal body temperatures of 41.7º are considered to be lethal for a human. Even leaving the windows slightly open will only drop the car temp by a couple of degrees. Children’s bodies heat up more than three times faster than adults, and children have died from being left in a car too long. This is considered to be very serious, and the maximum penalty in WA is up to three years imprisonment and a fine of up to $36,000.
