One of the most neglected facets of owning a trailer is performing regular maintenance to keep your trailers safe and reliable. That’s unfortunate, because proper maintenance will add years to your trailer’s life and necessary if you want your trailer to function properly and look nice too!

Washing a trailer

Washing your trailer on a regular basis is one of the key performances to keep your trailer clean, especially if you own a box trailer. As such you could wash your trailer several times per year with warm hose water instead of pressure water to protect the painted surfaces. Use a specially formulated soap to avoid damaging the trailer‘s body and do not neglect the lights as road dust can also accumulate and degrade every single inch of the trailer body. Make sure you clean and spray out hard reaching areas with a hose since that’s where dirt, dust and road chemicals are likely to pile up.

Properly Grease a Trailer

Features like joints and axels needs to be lubricated occasionally to prevent corrosion and friction. It’s recommended to grease your trailer’s moving parts few times per year before each long trip for proper load distribution and integrity. Greasing must be done regularly to prevent unnecessary friction on the trailer axle. It sounds like a pain but the wheel bearings and inner bearings should be cleaned in depth to lose the entire dirt and to prevent breaking the seal and wipe out the excess grease.

Checking Air pressure in tires

If your trailer’s been sitting around unused for a while, make sure your tires are properly inflated. This is important because the loss of air pressure in the tires while they are spinning on the road with extra weight is dangerous. Driving your trailer on open road with under inflated tires can cause cracks on the rubber and if you increase the driving speed? swaying of the trailer can also occur. Be sure to observe the recommended inflation. It’s a good idea to replace the tires every 3-5 years and don’t forget to store your trailer properly protecting the tires from premature cracking and splitting.

Testing trailer Lights

Before you dive deep into this, understand how important is it to have a friend/tester to sit in the vehicle, activating the lights while you are observing from the outside. A bad or weak light can’t be spotted only by single person so always test the lights on the other site of the trailer.

Hopefully everything works perfect for you. It may take a little time to check if everything functions properly after your trailer was stored for a longer period of time.
