Today’s engraving and printing industry exhibits some significant differences from its counterpart from as recently as a few decades ago. The dizzying pace at which technology has progressed in the last twenty years or so has dictated that today’s methods for creating an engraved piece of artwork or 3D trophy are not only easier and more affordable than ever before, but also more varied.
In fact, someone who wishes to create, say, a 3D trophy nowadays has more than one technique available through which to do so. These range from the more traditional, such as sandblasting, to the more technologically advanced, such as the increasingly popular laser printing; however, the technique still regarded by most artists and printers as being the most effortless and rewarding is rotary printing.
Rotary engraving – what's it all about?
And indeed, when observed from an outside perspective, it is easy to see why this opinion is so widespread. While old-fashioned, traditional and arguably more cumbersome than something like laser-printing, rotary engraving still does offer a few distinct advantages for the creation of 3D trophy pieces over other methods.
Versatile
One such advantage, for instance, is the technique’s versatility. Due to its artisanal quality, rotary engraving – or mechanical engraving, as it is also called – can be used in a plethora of materials and surfaces, ranging from wood to plastic, acrylic, glass, ceramic, and the majority of metals. This gives both customers and designers utilising this technique a wide range of options to choose from when creating their piece.
Shine bright in metal
Of the materials detailed above, it is undoubtedly in metal that mechanical engraving shines the brightest. Quite simply, this technique allows any and all metal pieces to be customised and personalised, with virtually nothing being too tough for its needles and spindle. This, in turn, allows artists still working in this traditional method to reach all sorts of different audiences, potentially extending their influence from the 3D trophy market all the way to signage.
Unique and distinct
Another perk of rotary engraving when compared to laser engraving or sandblasting is the distinct look it gives the piece. Nothing looks quite like a rotary-engraved piece of artwork, a fact lovers of the unique and individual are sure to appreciate.
Software-wise, this form of engraving and three-dimensional printing is no more demanding or complicated than any of its counterparts, which when added to the qualities detailed in the paragraphs above ensures traditional rotary engraving continues to have a place in the world of visual and graphic arts.
