Everybody Hurts: The Importance of Nursing Sports Injuries

Playing sports is an excellent way to stay healthy and in shape. What’s not healthy, however, is paying no heed to the injuries that surface while training for a triathlon.

Let’s get one thing straight. Exercise is important, whether you’re an athlete or a regular runner. Exercise-related injuries are common and preventable, but they’re not to be taken lightly, especially if you intend to prepare for a big sporting event.

Types of Injuries

A lot of people seem to think that serious athletic injuries are confined to particularly aggressive sports. While it’s true that professional wrestling and martial arts are obviously more prone to physical aggression, people who play football and rugby are equally susceptible to concussions, and joint and muscle-related injuries.

To be more specific, athletes playing any sport are likely to experience one or more of the following:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Ankle sprain
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Quad strain
  • Hip bursitis
  • Elbow pain
  • Neck pain
  • Hamstring pull
  • Lower back pain

General (but equally serious) injuries include sprains, strains, fractures, muscle cramps, dislocations, lacerations, contusions and abrasions.

Playing Through the Pain

Contrary to popular opinion, the scary thing about sports injuries isn’t how common they are. It’s the fact that a rising number of people choose to play through the pain, thinking it will somehow subside in due time.

This is not only detrimental to your overall health, but has a tendency of affecting your future as an avid sportsperson.

In some cases, conversely, the injury can be so severe that a person loses the will and inclination to get back into sports or exercise again.

Both situations are extreme and can exacerbate your pre-existing condition.

While some home remedies are great at providing instant relief, such as rest, ice, compression and elevation (R.I.C.E. therapy), chronic pain in any area of your body can be a serious sign for medical intervention.

Don’t Think Twice, Consult a Professional!

Unfortunately, in many cases, athletes do not realize the enormity of the problem until their performance begins to slow down, despite putting in twice the effort.

Not only does this set a poor example for others, but turns an easily treatable condition turned into a chronic episode.

When it comes to sports injuries, don’t play through the pain.
