How Does Bituminous Road Construction Work?

Road construction is a lengthy process involving the utilization of a large amount of efforts and considerable manpower to be pulled off well. Step 1: Preparing the existing Base Course Layer

This work begins with the removal of any kinds of potholes or rust present on the current surface. Post these, any observed irregularities are filled in with premix chipping. This is done at least one week before the surface course is laid. Post this, a largely bituminous concrete surface course is overlaid on a binder course, instead of it directly being laid upon a WBM.

Step 2: Tuck Coat application

A smooth AC layer is laid upon a bituminous base or binder course. Post this, a tack coat of bitumen is applied onto the previous layer.

Step 3: Premix preparation and placement

The process of premix preparation happens in a hot mix plant of a given capacity. Quality control mechanisms are applied to this process in a thorough way at this stage. To begin with, the bitumen is heated to a high temperature. Once this is done, the hot mixed material is collected from the mixture through the use of transporters and carried to the location where the road is being constructed. It is then spread with the help of a mechanical paver.

Step 4: Rolling

This process involves compacting the mix by rolling it at a speed of approximately 5 kilometres per hour. Depending upon the layer thickness, the number of passes is either ordered or changed.

Step 5: Controlling the quality of Bituminous Concrete Construction

During this process, routine quality checks are carried out on site to ensure that the resulting pavement mixture and pavement surface are of a high quality. These checks are made periodically for aggregate grading, bitumen grading, aggregate temperature verification and checking the temperature of the paving mix during the work of mixing and compaction.

Step 6: Checking the finished surface quality

This work involves checking the AC surface for the quality of its edge and longitudinal undulations.
