Everything You Wanted To Know about CDS Exams

Combined defense service exams are conducted by (UPSC) union public service commission twice a year in the month of February and November for the recruitment into military academy. This exam is only conducted for unmarried under graduates and after the academic test interview is conducted by the service selection board (SSB). The announcement regarding this exam is released by UPES in month of October and June.
For Indian military or air force academy or naval academy, the exam is of three hundred marks having English, general knowledge and elementary math as the subjects for hundred marks each. And for selection of officers training exam the test is of two hundred marks having English and general knowledge as the subject for hundred marks each.
The ones who have cleared the written exam are called for the interview which is approximately seven days long process where in the candidates undergo several physical and psychological tests which determines whether they are suitable for the military academy or not. After the interview there are two more stages which the candidate has to clear before serving for the army.
After clearing the interview the candidate has to undergo a medical test so as to confirm that the candidate is medically fit to serve the nation. And then there is a rigorous training which only those candidates undergo which have cleared all the above mention tests. The SSB interview is in majority based on the trait theory; the interviewers there believe that anyone who is admitted in Indian navy or army should possess the traits and quality of a leader.
The leader can take harsh decision when time comes for the country. They basically are looking for the qualities like initiative taking, alertness, courage, physical fitness, endurance, cooperation, group planning and the last and most important attribute which they want is the overall personality of the candidate.
Eligibility of giving the exam
- Age criteria:
 
The ones who are appearing for Indian military academy and air force academy should lie between nineteen to twenty four years of age and the ones who are appearing for naval academy should be between nineteen to twenty two years of age and the candidates which want to give exam for officers training academy should lie between nineteen to twenty seven years of age.
- Educational Qualification:
 
The candidate appearing for CDS exam should at least have an undergraduate degree of a recognized University or equivalent for IMA and OTA. And for naval academy the candidate should at least have B.Sc. with Physics & Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering. For sir force academy the candidate should have B.Sc. with Physics and/or Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering.
Note:
For appearing for the combined defense service exam the applicant is from any academic background but for applying for air force and navy it is mandatory that the applicant must have physics and math till class 12th. And the students studying in the final year of their under graduate can also apply for the combined defense service exam.
