Spec New Trucks Right the First Time Around to Maximize Fleet Productivity
Posted: Mar 19, 2014
1888PressRelease - In a blog posted on the AmeriQuest Transportation Services Website, capital equipment expert Jim Sweeney points to the resources that are available to fleet owners as they make hundreds of decisions during the vehicle specification process.
CHERRY HILL, NJ - Fleet owners can maximize their fleet's productivity by taking advantage of the variety of resources available to them both before and during the truck specification process. Jim Sweeney, Vice President of Capital Equipment for AmeriQuest Transportation Services says in a blog on the topic that it's essential for owners to turn to manufacturers and other experts when weighing the literally hundreds of decisions that must be made.
"When you spend an average $110,000 for a day cab or $115,000 to $130,000 for a sleeper, you need to know how each choice potentially impacts the other," he says. "For instance, moving from dual to wide-base tires will affect the choice of brakes, while adding an APU will impact the electrical system. Just one mistake can lead to others down the road."
He also points out that having a clear picture of fleet behavior, including studying data on current routes, expected and pickup deliveries and their sequence, and distance and time traveled will enable owners and managers to get the most productive use of their vehicles. "Keep an open mind during this step of the process because it might make more sense to spec a straight truck instead of a Class 8 which has traditionally been employed," Sweeney says.
The blog goes on to explain whether it's advisable to call in a logistics expert during this time and how much assistance dealers and manufacturers can lend when $110,000-plus decisions are being weighed.
