A student is bound to have a lot of questions when making a move to a new college in a new country. And it is important to put these questions forth to the college coach in order to gain first hand information about the college as well as the athletic program one is registering for. The scholar does not necessarily have to wait for a face to face meeting with the coach to ask questions. Questions can be asked when writing e-mails or over telephonic conversations. When students ask questions, it shows the coach that they are serious about their future goals as an athlete.

To procure information regarding the team should be one of the foremost priorities of a student athlete. One should ask his/her coach about the team’s strengths and weaknesses as well as the immediate needs. Secondly, information about the coach’s teaching should follow. It is important for a student to know this so one can prepare himself/herself accordingly to match up to the coach’s expectations. Try and learn about the coach’s training style as much as you can as this will help you to climb up the ladder fast and quick.

When going to a college, it is imperative that one learns about the schedules beforehand. This includes travel schedules, unofficial practices and usual gaming sessions as well. Try and incorporate questions regarding off season practice sessions too. Getting this kind of information is useful in order to properly divide your time between sports and academics. Also, as an athlete, a student should know about the facilities available to him/her during college. When will he/she have access to the facilities and if the facilities will have an upgrade anytime soon? These questions are important to have answers to.

A coach can answer crucial questions that can help a student prepare better for college life. Therefore apart from the above, some general questions about recruitment, admissions and scholarships should always be asked. Student athletes should also know if they will be given any special preference during the admission process. He/she should know exactly what benefits are going to be reaped from a particular program so the student can make an informed choice.

When a student gets admission on the basis of a soccer or golf scholarship in USA, he/she should also know if there is any possibility of an increase in the scholarship fund after the freshman year. While scoring a scholarship, it is also necessary to know what all will be covered under it. Student athletes run into minor injuries very often, therefore it becomes vital for them to also know if medical expenses will also be covered by the college (on the basis of scholarship) or not.

When questions from multiple categories like above are asked, it immediately sets the tone in the coach’s mind regarding the student’s persona and the seriousness of his/her nature. Therefore, view the process of asking questions and receiving answers as an essential step when making the big shift to college life in America.
