Pain is a strange sensation that doesn’t only make us uncomfortable but affects our everyday life substantially. Just like a headache, backache and joint pain, neck pain is also becoming a common medical problem faced by almost every individual at some point in life.

Neck pain is not always serious and can be treated in few weeks with proper medication and exercise. But in some cases, it might lead to severe illness conditions and require a proper doctor’s care.

Neck pain has a variety of causes from which a few common ones are mentioned here:

  • Tense and strained muscle

This is the most common cause of neck pain but fortunately only takes a few days to heal. Overusing the muscle causes irritation and swelling resulting in stiffness and neck pain. To avoid this painful condition, we must restrict from activities causing tension in the muscle. Here are some factors that result in muscle strain:

Poor posture results in long-term neck problems. When a person keeps his/her head tilted forward for longer durations, the work of neck muscle gets harder resulting in increased strain. Same wise, people do not maintain proper posture while doing regular tasks such as using computers, playing games and reading books. Neck posture also gets upset due to excessive use of mobile for text messaging.

The wrong sleeping position is another reason of strained muscle. When a person sleeps for hours in an awkward position, he/she wakes with neck pain. People who use double pillows to high the neck during sleep face this issue the most.

Moving neck repetitively during dancing or swimming also causes muscle strain because of its overuse.

  • Injury

Your neck is quite vulnerable to injuries hence it’s another cause of neck pain. Here are two types of injuries that usually become the reason of serious neck pain:

Sports injury: during sports, there are chances of falling, colliding and moving your neck in an unusual way resulting in nerve or muscle damage. Such an injury is totally interior but needs to be treated by a doctor immediately to avoid intense results.

Whiplash injury: Whiplash injury usually happens in accidents when victim’s head and neck goes back and forth forcefully with no control. In the result of such an unexpected force, it’s possible that tissues near the cervical spine get ruptured or torn.

  • Heart attack

Neck pain is also a symptom of a heart attack but to confirm, you will have to check for other symptoms as well. Sweating, nausea, vomiting and arm pain are other prominent signs of heart attack. If you notice these all signs in addition to neck pain, call an advanced level ambulance for immediate medical assistance.

Apart from these common causes, there are many serious diseases such as Cervical osteoarthritis and disc disease causing chronic neck pain. The only way to avoid this painful condition is to keep your lifestyle healthy and consult doctors to treat your pain properly.
