Is It a Bed or a Sofa or a Fusion of Both? Modern Sofa Beds and Great Choice for today’s Home

An Historical Perspective

In the late nineteenth century (1885 to be exact) a bed with a dual purpose showed up on paper in the form of a patent application. Surprisingly--when one considers the historical place and time--Sarah Goode, who was once a slave, became the first African American woman to acquire a patent for creating a bed that folded two ways inside and outside of a desk, believe it or not. (Talk about a good hiding place.) The concept came about during her talks with various customers who purchased furniture from the Chicago retail store where she worked. The common theme or complaint was “a lack of space”. Although there may have been older versions of a sofa-bed farther back in history, this example seems to be the official, commercial prototype or forerunner of contemporary sleep-sofa.

Sofa-beds come in different incarnations, from chameleon-like chaise-lounges to affordable futons that have folding frames with a duel personality.

A Modern View

In this modern age that we co-exist in, modern and efficient sleeper-sofas abound in different shapes, sizes, colors and levels of quality, especially the quality of the materials used in their production and how toxic or environmentally-friendly they are. However, they all have three fundamental traits in common: 1) the frame is adjustable or foldable horizontally and vertically, allowing people to both sit and recline as needed, 2) the mattress or cushions are adaptable or foldable, and 3) they take up less space in your home or office, which is always a positive thing for most people. When opened up for sleeping, they usually measure about six feet long, and their width can range anywhere from a twin size to a king size, so sleeper-beds are more flexible than one might think when it comes to dimensions.

A Future Vision

As time passes, sofa-beds are becoming more sophisticated in their structure, their appearance, their weight, their functioning and their adaptability where location is concerned. Concerning this last feature, the kind of sofa-bed you would chose for an office would be different than one you would choose for your home, because you would want a more professional appearance in your office and more cozy look in your guest-room or living-room.

Another thing to consider is how committed you are to purchase eco-friendly products and the long-term impact they have on both the environment and your personal health. More than ever, it’s crucial that we all have both a personal and a collective vision about the future of the world we share and the individual worlds that we all create for ourselves.
