The industries are required to grow to satisfy the need of the society but at the same time they need to do all this in an environmental, health and safety acceptable manner. Of late, industries have been reactive towards HSE management system and follow up of safe production practices. In this scenario, the concept of HSE through plan approach of system implementation for environmental, health and safety issues are taking shape.

Implementation of proper HSE management system - Health, Safety and Environment Management System as per requirement of ISO 14001 Environment management standard and OHSAS 18001 standard for occupational health and safety management system improves business, often having a positive effect on investment, sales growth, competitive advantage. The basic requirements of HSE implementation are preparation of HSE manual, adequately safety planning, environment control system, risk free organization and employee motivation. HSE guidelines provide a comprehensive model for environment, health and safety management systems that can make any company competitive.

However, in this system there are generally a lot of rework and wastage's. Experience of other industries globally shows that extensive efforts on the part of each and every person in the organisation are needed for upgrading the existing system to meet the requirements of HSE management system as per ISO 14001:2015 EMS and OHSAS 18001 standards.

The time required for installation of HSE system in any company may vary depending upon their present status and work culture. An estimate of 4 to 8 months is required for a unit involving over 100 employees. The total cost involved consultancy body, fees of certifying body, resource requirement etc. depending on infrastructure available with the company establish system and complexity of work involved.

  1. Conduct awareness programmes (Top + Middle + Bottom Level).
  2. Form a task force for documentation.
  3. Prepare documents of EQMS System.
  4. Implementation and train all personnel in the use of procedures and formats.
  5. Train internal auditors.
  6. Assess the system through an internal audit.
  7. Take corrective actions for non-compliances.
  8. Apply for certification.
  9. Assess the system through second round of internal audit.
  10. Avail pre-certification audit of certifying body.
  11. Take actions on suggestions given by them.
  12. Maintain and improve the system by third round of internal audit.
  13. Final audit by certifying body.

Organisations certified to ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001 - HSE would achieve significant competitive edge over Organisations engaged in similar operations (activities, products and services), as it reflects the protectiveness of Organisation to protect the environment through preventive mechanisms rather than corrective one. It improves Environment and OHSAS performance which increase productivity and meet customer's environmental and OHSAS expectations to maintain good public relations.
