Throughout several decades we have been asked the same question over and over again. That question is "what characteristics make a great real estate agent"? Over the years we have thought about that question time and time again and have looked at each of our own qualities and have come to a resounding conclusion of the characteristics that make up a great real estate agent.

Much of the characteristics are intrinsic qualities that motivate and energize the agent to perform on a higher level than the average agent. We have done business with hundreds of different types of individuals from all walks of life. It does not matter what type of work they did before becoming a real estate agent, if they had these internal qualities, they became great real estate agents.

We have also found that educational level does not matter as well. We have worked with highly educated individuals with doctorates and master’s degrees but did not have a flare for real estate because they lacked the specific characteristics that make an outstanding real estate agent. You can be highly intelligent but lack people skills and common sense which puts you in a category not fit for real estate whether commercial or residential.

There are some things that are extrinsic or external that agents can work on to help build up their clientele and presence in the field if they lack some of the self-motivating or personal characteristics to become a great real estate agent. Even if you are already excelling at either commercial or residential real estate as an agent these tips are highly recommended to stay diligent and competitive in today’s real estate market:

  • Ask your investors and vendors for leads- this opens up your market share and gives you a competitive advantage
  • Joint ventures with other agents- two heads are always better than one
  • Go online- gain a social media following and open up more leads for yourself
  • Partner with a publicist- or pitch your own ventures to news reporters and journalists
  • Always take the deal- don’t turn down anything
  • Open house after open house- continuously have open houses- lots of foot traffic= sales
  • Keep in contact with past clients- use your social media for this and as a referral source as well
  • Use a real estate coach- a coach will keep you up to date on new techniques and ideas
  • Simply be true to yourself- be you!

There are many different people who interact during the process of real estate transactions from investors, contractors, loan officers, attorneys, inspectors, banks, appraisers, buyers, sellers, and different local government agencies and authorities. The only constant individual throughout the entire process is the real estate agent who is actually the coordinator of the real estate process in its entirety. A great real estate agent must wear many different hats as the coordinator such as a seller, marketer, representative, project manager, business manager, advocate for a seller, buyer and sometimes both at once, market analyst and so many more. There are some characteristics we have found common among proven professional grade real estate agents that we are going to share with you.

Be an Active Listener

A great real estate agent will be an active listener. To truly understand client needs and know what they desire the agent needs to listen to understand. A great agent will take what a client desires and turn it into reality.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Exceptional real estate agents share the common characteristic of having an entrepreneurial spirit. They desire the freedom to set their own hours, be their own boss and have the drive to succeed and make a lot of money.

Making a Difference

Great real estate agents have the ability to turn problems into solutions and dreams into realities. A common trait among successful agents is a creative problem solving ability such as taking an unattractive listing and knowing how to make it attractive to targeted demographics.

Social Graces

To be a successful real estate agent an endearing personality is a must. A shared trait among great agents is a magnetic and personable personality. It should be a personality that many people can connect with and relate to and one that allows them to not be afraid to pass the word on to their friends about how great you are as a real estate agent.

Ethics

There is nothing more important in real estate than your reputation. Your ethics should be about honesty, integrity and prove that you take pride in your community. Joining reputable associations and gaining local accreditations and certifications will help showcase your promise to uphold a strict standard of ethics and practices.

Perseverance and Tenacity

To be an exceptionally successful real estate agent you must be tenacious and persistent. You have to have the desire to follow each lead, market each property aggressively, and doing what is crucial to make the deal each and every time.

Community Understanding

Having a sound understanding of the local real estate market is important and successful real estate agents share a common trait called seeking knowledge around every corner. They get involved in the local community, take notice of market developments, local market pricing strategies and learn all the unique nuances of their local real estate market. Great real estate agents also know how to develop their own unique position within the local market where they stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Network

A great real estate agent knows how to build a huge network of professionals in which they work with. This is a critical aspect of building a solid framework for an exceptional real estate career. A successful real estate agent will have a network full of buyers, sellers, lawyers, loan officers, banks, inspectors, other real estate agents, brokers, appraisers and the list goes on. Building a network of individuals that are crucial cogs in the real estate process helps to build a successful business as a real estate agent.

Execution and Drive

To be a great real estate agent you must be able to focus on each step of the process for each project or listing you have at any given time. You cannot be distracted or led off into the weeds for even one second. You have to have the drive and motivation to see each transaction through to the end of the long real estate process and then have the tenacity to find the next lead and start all over again. You have to have the ability to juggle multiple ventures at once without dropping the ball on any one of them.

These are only some of the more critical and common characteristics, traits and abilities that successful and professional real estate agents share. Over the years we have noticed these, and many others not mentioned here, that have proven time and time again to help build successful real estate businesses for many individuals. If you have these qualities maybe consider becoming a real estate agent. Who knows maybe you’ll be the next millionaire real estate mogul.
