RVs are fun vehicles, no doubt about that. However, if things go wrong, the fun doesn’t last so long. According to statistics, almost 3 out of 10 RVs will require a major repair by the second year, and almost every RV will need a major replacement by the eighth year.

The breakdowns and problems don’t necessarily mean you need to give up on your camping adventures.

Here are some of the most common RV breakdowns and how you can avoid them:

Engine Problems

Some of the most common problems you will face will be with the engine. Thankfully, most problems here will require easy, quick fixes to get you back on the road. These problems could range from a filter that needs changed, a faulty coolant, improper fuel or other chassis problems. Having an in depth understanding of your vehicle will help you avoid most of these problems.

Battery Trouble

The batteries on your RV need to be adequately charged at all times. If the RV is parked in storage, consider charging the batteries every 8 to 10 days. Leaving the engine started for about an hour will help you do this.

Also, the house battery should charge seamlessly when plugged into shore power. If you are having trouble charging the house battery the problem could be the shore power connection.

Overloading Electrical Load

RVs are designed to work smoothly with the pre-installed appliances. Therefore, be extra careful when using something that pulls in more amperes like coffee makers or hair dryers. The air conditioning unit on the roof pulls most of the power therefore be sure to turn major appliances off before putting in extra electric load.

Tires

Tires will naturally give up after taking a lot of wear on the road. Particularly tires that haven’t been cared for appropriately are more likely to blow out at the worst time possible. Tire replacements start off from a $1000 and in most cases insurance doesn’t cover tires.

Every time you pull over for gas, make sure you inspect all tires. Look for inappropriate air pressure or uneven wear.

The easiest way to avoid all these problems and stay on the road is to know your vehicle. Inspect all components regularly and follow these tips.
