Humans are creatures of habit and these habits define our existence. It could be a tendency to behave in a certain way or preference for a certain kind of life or even inclination towards something we like. These habits are something we do repeatedly, have been doing since many years and now they form the routine and pattern of our life. In fact, our habits become so ingrained that they become a predisposition or even a custom without us ever realizing the same.

And what is wrong with these kind of leanings you may ask? After all, a person can continue to read a book in the loo, browse the phone while eating, or watch TV before going to bed. So what is the need for healthy habits coaching?

However, not all habits are good or non-threatening like these? Consider these – feeling too lazy to exercise, being over-dependent on coffee, procrastinating work as long as possible, over-indulging in alcohol, craving a smoke every hour, or even lying/cheating to get your way. Now should such habits be defining who you are?

Habits are actually learned behaviors that we have allowed to become our identity. It is easy to say that habits cannot be broken – this crutch is useful for continuing to speak, work and act in the way we are accustomed to doing.

The Ripple of Change

While change is imperative, it is actually very difficult to break old habits, especially when you like them or they are easy. Alcoholics and chain-smokers will vouch that it takes immense willpower, self-confidence, motivation, and support to beat the habits. Still, many often end up reverting to their old ways very soon.

What is actually needed is a guiding force that can impel you to leave the habits behind and that too, for good. This comes in the form of healthy habits coaching.

A health coach will first empower you to understand your habits for what they are and how to separate them from who you really are. This will bring awareness of the conscious choices that are essential to break out of the rut of the habit. Indeed, you yourself discover the changes that you can make and how to incorporate them in your daily life.

The healthy habits coach gently induces you to inculcate the changes slowly and methodically. They guide you step by step with small changes that are both achievable and sustainable. You are motivated to look forward to what you can achieve rather than what you used to do in the past. They also hold you accountable for your actions even as they provide constant support for changing habits and making them stick.

In sum, a health coach can truly mean the difference between letting go of a pattern, attitude, or behavior and the habit continuing to define your identity forever.
