Being a car lover, you must know the benefit of remapping or chipping. If not, then continue reading the article below to know more about it. Basically, engine remapping is one of the greatest ways to get more power out of your car or van engine. Let us learn what these terms actually belongs to and how they can benefit you?

Remapping, chipping or tuning- what is it?

All three terms are used to describe the same thing. The newer models of cars are having an engine control unit within its engine that controls fuelling. The ECU is said to be the brain of the engine that has everything coded into it that will be required any time by the car’s system. As soon as you put your foot down the engine control unit decides how much fuel and air to mix, squirt into cylinder and ignite. The engine control unit also controls the boost of the turbo.

The remapping, chipping or tuning of a vehicle changes the ECU parameters giving more performance and more economy from your engine. ECU Remapping is done in many ways; let’s have a look at the few prominent ways:

  • The first one is to connect to the vehicle’s diagnostic port and reflash the software on the engine control unit with a standard map. This process is performed using software, and therefore, a new map can be uploaded to your vehicle’s ECU much quickly within just a span of an hour.
  • The second way is bit costlier but it will help you get better results. Get
custom ECU remap for your vehicle. In this process the vehicle is connected to a laptop and instead of uploading a one-size-fits-all remap, the parameters of your vehicle can purposively be altered. This process is further combined with runs on a dynamometer, so that your vehicle’s performance and fuelling is checked and tweaked all the way through the rev range.

Make sure that you get your vehicle remapped with someone who knows what he is doing and also ensures that he’ll do it better. Such an option may cost more, but it is always better to get such things done from someone who assures to do it properly.

You might have read at many places that the process of remapping, chipping or tuning is easier. But if is it so, why don’t the manufacturers do it in advance? There are many reasons that the makers do not supply the vehicles already maximised as far as performance and economy go. The reasons behind manufacturers not getting it done are:

  • The manufacturers mainly focus on the reliability because some people look after their vehicle by regularly servicing them and by taking their good care. Whereas some people do not do anything other than putting fuel into it. There are different grades of fuel, depending on where you are.
  • Another issue is that manufacturers often have a wide range of vehicles and the most powerful vehicles in the range are usually the expensive ones. The makers many time stifle the performance of engines to make sure there is a clear difference in the power as you step up the range. In many cases people prefer buying low cost vehicle and getting it remap to equal or beat the next model in the range.

Why you should get your vehicle remapped?

There are several things you need to bear in mind when thinking about getting your vehicle remapped including rolling road tuning. Here we have a few things for you to consider:

  • Think about the type of the engine you have in your vehicle. The best results can usually be had from turbo charged vehicles, both diesel and petrol and remapping them can lead to big performance gains as the boost from the turbo can be increased. Naturally aspirated engines will not give you the same performance gains. The larger and more powerful the engine is in the first place, the more gains you’ll get from remapping.
  • Extra performance is not the only thing that you get from remap. The economy of the car can often be increased as well. But this depends on how the car is driven.
