Tips For Sewing With a Rotary Cutter and Mat
Posted: Nov 12, 2017
A revolution has taken place in the cutting of sewer fabrics around the world. The rotary cutter is the basis of this exciting trend. This sewing tool makes cutting the fabric more accurate, less hand wear and user's wrist, faster, easier and safer.
This invention is simple but ingenious. It consists of a circular blade attached to a handle and protected by a sliding shield. You hold the handle in your hand and press down while rolling the cutter. It's so quick and easy. It's also safe when you take some basic precautions.
CAUTION: The rotary cutter is super sharp and will cut. Always keep security first. Keep the protective shield on the blade until it is ready to cut. Always use the right techniques. Stay away from the children. Don't run the cutter in your hand.
Use only sharp rotating blades. Replace dull or nicked blades. Sharpeners are available, but it is recommended to replace the blades and avoid problems. Avoid cutting pins, paper clips, staples, foreign objects and other things. When storing the tool, keep the guard on the blade.
Keep the rotary cutter in tip-top condition at all times. Keep it clean. Avoid oils, lint, debris, and pins.
Hold the rotating cutter firmly in your hand with the index finger aligned with the blade as a guide for full control. Avoid tightening your wrist.
Use the best rotary cutter only on a fully supported cutting surface. Never use a rotary cutter without a rotating cutting mat. Use the cutting mat at a stable cutting table capable of supporting the cutting process.
On top of the cutting mat, spread your fabric and smooth it. Remove any lumps, lumps or debris.
The anti-slip rules are great. You can add a non-slip surface to the back of the rules if you want. Always use a rotating cutting ruler each time you make long and/or straight cuts.
Place the edge of the clear ruler exactly where you want to cut. Note the grain line when setting your ruler to achieve the best possible cut. Place the swivel blade next to the ruler with the handle rising at the recommended angle (varies depending on the blade design). Pull the safety lever back by exposing the swivel blade. The blade should be aligned with the ruler, but it should not be cut.
While cutting, keep control of your body. It doesn't move stupid here. Stand for a comfortable range, height, and angle before starting a cut. Think about security. Don't go beyond comfort and control. Place your hands, arms, feet, and body for a maximum cut. One hand holds the cut by holding the ruler in place, while the cutting hand operates the cutter.
Again, never do it in an awkward way. Using a non-slip ruler makes it easy to walk with the support hand of the ruler while cutting. The procedure is easy to do. When you feel uncomfortable with your reach, stop the cut. Do not move the ruler or cutter. Move your support hand forward to a comfortable support position and start cutting again. Keep a constant pressure on the cutter until the end of the cut.
At the end of the cut, release the safety. Always close the blade after each cut. Every time you place the cutter, make sure the safety covers the blade. No one wants to be cut. It's also a good idea to wear shoes when cutting. Remember, respect the sharp rotating blade at all times.
The rotary cutters are fabulous. They make sewing and padding much faster. The cut is much smoother and more accurate. The more you learn about sewing tools, the more successful you become.
