Indian Railways is also considered as largest rail systems all over the world. Indian Railways is known to be regarded as one of the most employed sectors, which started almost 163 years ago. All the Railway Recruitment Board process is controlled by the 'Ministry of Railways, Government of India. There are various types of posts in the Indian railway departments for 10th 12th pass & engineering, medical degree holders. All the posts under the railway are divided into four categories (A, B, C, D).

Group A:

Group A and B are counted in 'Officer Grade'. Candidate’s recruitment is done through the Civil Services Exam / Engineering Service Exam / Combined Medical Examination. Normally UPSC conducts these exams. For Group A level, the candidates must have Engineering, MSc degree or MBBS level degree from the recognized institution.

Group B:

There is no special exam for Group B. This level of recruitment is usually done by promoting Group C candidates.

Group C & D:

The posts of Group C and D are covered under non-gadget subordinate posts. These category recruitment goes on the whole year from the Railway Recruitment Board. These are the posts of assistant station master, guards, clerk, ticket collector, traffic attendant, stenographer, catering friend helper, Khalasi, trolleyman, trackman etc. For selection of these categories recruitment is done through written examination. In the examination mostly objective type of question are asked. These contain questions are asked related to English, Hindi, General Knowledge, Math, Reasoning.

Most people will not be aware that various types of artists are also appointed on basis of their experiences under the traditional cultural quotas in the Railways. Their age limit may be 18 to 33 years and they must be at least 10th pass. In the selection of these, the candidates should be certificates in music, dance, drama etc. from the recognized institution, even written examination is also taken for the selection.

There are around 350 schools existing in the railway system, of which there are about five and a half thousand teachers. Their recruitment is done on the basis of written examination in the form of TGT, PGT, Primary Teacher, Physical Education Instructor or Librarian.

Most of the railway jobs have to be done outside of the house for a long time. Therefore, those who work in the railways have to take great care of their mental and physical health.
