India is a land of diversity. The traditional clothing of this country varies from state to state on the basis of the settings (urban or rural), climate, religion and culture. Saree

Salwar Kameez

Salwar Kameez which was earlier the clothing of North Indian women has today become the regular wear of women, both young and old, all over the country. It is a three piece suit with a loose trouser narrowing at the ankles, referred to as salwar; a long tunic known as kameez; and a long scarf known as dupatta for covering the bosom. Salwar kameez comes in a variety of materials such as cotton, chiffon, georgette, silk, linen, etc.

Ghagra Choli

Ghagra Choli or Lehenga Choli, is a typical traditional clothing of Northern Indian women. This too is a three – piece garment consisting of a lehenga, which is a pleated, long and embroidered skirt; a choli, which is a short, tightly fitting, short sleeved and low neck blouse; and a dupatta, which is a scarf with one end tuck into the skirt and the other end draped around the body and pinned to the shoulder over the choli.

Ghagra cholis come as regular wears, function wears and festival wears. The regular wears are made from cotton, while the festival wears are embellished, and the function wears are completely embroidered.

Kurti

Kurti or kurta is Indian tunic. It is a long blouse or shirt which reaches below the knee or till the waist. This is usually worn for office or homes. Usually, women wear kurtis with a dupatta. This clothing is paired with churidars which are narrow pants, or salwar which are loose trousers that are narrow at the ankles, or leggings or jeans. Some kurtis have two sewn openings on both sides.

These are some of the common Indian clothing worn by women across the country. There are other region based traditional clothing which are usually worn only in specific geographical locations.
