About Ball Bearings and Their Uses

How can you describe a ball bearing? Basically it is a ball with a smooth surface and with a certain amount of weight which is the driving factor behind its rotation. The ball or roller moves against a smooth inner and outer surface that is made from metal. They take on the load which in turn enables the device to spin.

In order to move the bearing a certain amount of force has to be put on it and this cannot be done by just any type of load, only radial and thrust loads. How do they work? Essentially, they work by moving load from the ball’s outer race to its inner race. As the ball touches the inner and outer race only at some points, the spinning happens smoothly.

A particular type of ball bearing rollers is the spherical roller thrust bearing, which is a bearing that is of the rolling model with thrust. The design of this type of bearing is to enable rotation in an environment that has only low friction.

Its key quality is that it allows angular misalignment and its purpose is to carry radial loads and heavy axial loads in one direction. A high quality spherical bearing will be able to work well even under the most difficult surroundings. It can operate well in spite of continuous usage and also when the temperature is very high.

It is made up of two rows of rollers which are in the shape of a barrel and all of which run in two raceways. One raceway is on the inner ring while the other is on the inner diameter of the outer ring. One of the most interesting implementation of ball bearings is in an automobile. An automotive bearing is one that is implemented in various parts of the car’s system to make them work. You can see them in the engine, transmission system, steering, air conditioners etc.
