It takes a lot of gut to live with someone you are not compatible with in the same room. Most people resent their roommates (especially students), and would wish to switch rooms simply because they cannot stand the person they are living with. You can however save yourself from all these frustrations by choosing a compatible roommate before reporting to the hostel or apartment. You however need to consider several factors in the process to ensure the person you choose won’t disappoint you, and will be fun to live with. You can also make use of a compatibility system to help choose a roommate to live with.

Below are a few factors you should consider when choosing a roommate.

  1. Chemistry and Personality: Chemistry determines whether you will be able to live with your roommate comfortably or not. There are many things that will determine whether the two of you have chemistry. This can be influenced by hobbies, interests or even lessons being undertaken. You will always find something to talk about with the roommate as long as you have chemistry or similar things together.
  2. Lifestyle: This has been a contributing factor to many disagreements among roommates. Someone may love socializing with other people and bringing them over in the room, while the other may be a homebody. Another lifestyle that makes many roommates disagree or clash is when one either smokes or takes beer and the other doesn’t. It is therefore advisable to choose roommate a roommate whose lifestyle is similar to yours.
  3. Education level: Roommates who have the same education level understand each other much better than if the gap is wide. This is because there is no gap between them, and they can understand each other properly. Living with anyone with a lower or higher educational level that you are may create some problems. In addition to this, college and university students do not cohabit properly, and disagreements may arise over very small matters.
  4. Financial status: The financial status of your roommate may determine whether you will be able to live with him/her or not. If you have a strong financial background, it would be advisable if you look for a roommate with the same and not any lesser unless you are willing to help. This is because your lifestyle and that of your roommate will be contradicting leading to more problems.
  5. Social responsibility and status: There are people who like everything to be done on their behalf, while there are those who love doing it by themselves. These two groups can never live in one room, as they will cross lines every now and then. It is therefore advisable to look out for a roommate with similar character traits as you are, otherwise you will have a hard time living with that person. You need to run some background check on the person you wish to live with before deciding it is him or her you want to share room with.

Finding a compatible roommate to live with for a semester or two can be a hard task. This is however not the case if you use a compatibility program or website to find a compatible roommate.
