When visiting Volkswagen dealers, Perth drivers often find themselves admiring the Beetle. This iconic model has been around for decades and has seen some dramatic transformations. However, the Beetle looks set to experience some even more significant changes, as it has been announced that the next generation will not only be rear wheel drive but also electric.

The Beetle Revival:

From the "bug" popular in the 1960s to the sleeker revamp, the Beetle has seen some massive changes over the years. The latest Beetle revival could mean that the model arriving in your local VW car dealers is a full electric. According to a UK report, the brand is looking to make changes for their I.D family campaign, and this could mean the Beetle is relaunched as a rear wheel drive EV.

Speaking recently, Herbert Diess, MD of the Passenger Cars division has said that Volkswagen is currently deciding on "emotional concepts" for upcoming electric cars. He defines this term as including iconic models such as the Beetle and Microbus in addition to the Buggy and Kubelwagen. He said that if the company did want to do a new Beetle, an EV would be a better option for today’s model. Additionally, it would be closer to the historic original as it could be offered as a rear wheel drive.

When Could We See It?

Mr. Diess was very careful not to confirm whether any decisions had made been about Beetle successors, but his comments do suggest that it would be a likely route to create an EV.

Should it actually be developed into a production model, it would be the second "emotional concept" Volkswagen model to be revived as a fully electric model. It would follow the market variant of the I.D Buzz Microbus concept that is due in Volkswagen dealers in 2022.

Mr. Diess did confirm that the MEB Volkswagen electric platform has already been pencilled in for 15 EV models in the coming years. Five of these models would be sold with a Volkswagen badge. The remainder is likely to be Skoda, Seat or Audi models.

The current Beetle is no longer offered for sale in Australia due to slow sales. However, it is still available in overseas marketplaces such as Europe as both a hatch or cabriolet. With a growing interest in EV models, if the Beetle was developed into an electric model, it may have a place in Australian showrooms in the coming years.
