Rise above the traffic and the tourist hot spots in Mexico’s capital city and you could experience cool neighbourhoods with some of the best restaurants in the world, vibrant markets, plus galleries and parks that make for a perfect city break. Here we take you through some of our favourite spots in Mexico, where you can immerse yourself in local life. Contact Brightsun Travel about cheap flights to Mexico and secure an exciting Latin American city break this holiday.

1 Cool Neighbourhoods

Stroll around La Roma, or neighbouring Condesa, eclectic bohemian neighbourhoods full of cafes, galleries, plazas and parks, and you could sip inventive cocktails in trendy bars, eat incredible food in revamped cantinas, pass too-good-to-be-true bakeries, and shop in up-and-coming boutiques with a young hip crowd.

2 Vibrant Markets

The El Bazar Sabado is an institution in the city, where you can buy some of the best Mexican handicrafts available, and sample traditional Mexican food. Alternatively, head to Mercado de San Juan at the weekend, and explore gourmet produce and exotic fruits and vegetables. Make sure you stop to sample some international wine and cheese in one of the best people watching spots in the city.

3 Peaceful Parks

Chapultepec is the city’s largest park, and one of the largest city parks in the Western hemisphere. In Springtime, Parque Mexico comes alive with thousands of blooming jacaranda trees in the heart of the city. And just outside the city is the Parque Nacional Desierto de los Leones, full of pine and oak forests, offering an urban oasis.

4 Award-winning Chefs

Elena Reygada (Latin America's Best Female Chef 2014) runs a number of restaurants, bakeries and breakfast joints across Mexico City that are well worth exploring. Have breakfast at the newly opened Lardo, serving fresh juices and pastries, stop off at Panadería Rosetta in Colonia Roma for lunch, and end up at Rosetta, an elegant Italian restaurant.

5 Incredible Art

Housed in a beautiful 18th century building, the Franz Mayer Museum has a large collection of art dating back centuries. Visit the Museo Frida Kahlo, the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo and the incredible Palacio de Bellas Artes and explore art work by world-famous Mexican artists. Finish at the Museo Mural Diego Rivera and marvel at a 15 metre long mural.
