Depression has become quite common these days and the cause for this varies from individual to individual. The medication effexor is mainly used to treat depression, general anxiety and social anxiety problems in adults. This medicine is considered to be the most active amongst the new anti-depressants that are available in the market. Depression patients usually complain of lethargy and not being motivated. This medicine helps some people who have these symptoms to overcome it whereas in some others it increases the risk of anxiety and agitation.

Effexor is a very effective anti depression drug for many people especially for those who are suffering from treatment-resistant depression. Some people have tried other anti-depressants for their depression problems before taking effexor but have not found any improvement in their condition. Effexor also reduces the severe symptoms of ‘hot-flashes’ in menopausal women.

In addition to the above, an effexor reviews Consumer Report study of September 2004 has ranked it as one of the six mostly prescribed anxiety panic disorder medicine. However, this should not be considered as the ultimate finding as the response to psychiatric medicines usually differs from person to person and the severity of the case.

Patients who have a major depression problem and who are taking effexor experience loss of weight, general anxiety problems and social phobia. Lack of sexual desire and high blood pressure are some of the disturbing side effects of this medication. Hence it is not recommended for persons who already have hypertension problems. This medication should not be given to children and to persons who suffer from seizure problems. Generic effexor xr is also available and it will be cheaper than the branded drug.

The energizing effect of this drug may lead to increase in anxiety or a depressed state of mind. The specific modality of the effect is not very well understood, but a Black Box Warning has been issued with regard to effexor and other SSRI and SSRN anti-depressants that there is a risk of having suicidal tendencies.

Some studies which have been conducted even questions the effectiveness of the drug in tackling depression problems. The black box warning advises medical practitioners to monitor the patients who are taking this drug for risk of suicide when the patient begins to take the drug and also whenever the dosage is increased or decreased. Family members of the patient should be kept informed of this fatal side effect to help them protect their loved one from taking this extreme step and also take them to the hospital immediately in case of an emergency. This anxiety panic disorder treatment drug is risky for patients who are mentally unstable and have Borderline Personality Disorder. Certain depressive phases of bipolar problems are also sometimes treated with effexor. But these patients treated with this drug can suffer from side effects like psychosis, a mixed state of mind etc. if treated without a mood stabilizer.

The other common side effects of the drug include nausea, vertigo, high blood pressure, dryness in the mouth, sexual dysfunction, sweating etc.
