While their dazzling creations and incredible talent catapult them into a realm that is somewhat surreal to the layman, the fact remains that even the most world-renowned unique engagement ring designers are, at the end of the day, only human. As human beings they are influenced by taste, and will of course have certain styles and materials that they favour above all others.

A few of those tastes and styles were recently disclosed by a British journalist who is a member of leading periodical The Telegraph’s fashion team, when she interviewed some of the leading jewellers and fashion designers to find out their preferences with regards to jewellery.

Different Influences

The most distinctive part of the article in question was just how many different influences it showcased as a base for stunning bespoke and mass-market jewellery. Most of the unique engagement ring designers and jewellers interviewed had their own, unlikely source of inspiration that helped justify the look and feel of their own specific pieces.

Upmarket designers of clothes and jewels, such as Domenico Dolce and Steffano Gabbanna, for example, revealed that the main inspiration for their work lies with their families. Their jewellery in particular is inspired by the pieces that their mothers used to wear, and the aim of their collections is to replicate the look and feel of those family heirlooms that are passed down from generation to generation. These two designers expressed a preference for black jewellery.

Other unique engagement ring designers, however, expressed rather more sophisticated tastes. The style director for Cartier revealed a preference for an intricate brooch designed with petal sapphires while the representative of Fabergé claimed that the company’s traditional hard stone egg-like pieces are her favourites, stating that they remind her of the Russian seasons, which are her main source of inspiration.

And speaking of inspiration, some of the most interesting-looking pieces on offer came from equally as interesting muses. Annoushka and Louis Vuitton, for instance, base their warm-coloured, attractive collection on their creative directors’ love of travel, while Hermés uses the horse as the source for their latest collection, with their representative confessing a love for a rose gold and black jade ring. Even more traditional collections, based upon flowers or historic designs, present plenty of visually stimulating designs derived from their directors’ main sources of interest.

Above all, this article showcases the biggest strength of unique engagement ring designers, and that is their capacity to create something beautiful, appealing and original using their own tastes and interests as a starting point.
