You're Guide to Wearing Sandals Like the Pros

OK, so it’s the dead of winter right now in the UK and you might be wondering why on earth I’ve written a blog about sandals? Well, between my friendship groups, at least four couples are going away for some winter sun. This is a trend that I've noticed over the last few years, and that seems to be increasingly popular – especially amongst people in their late 20s/early 30s.

Given this, I thought I’d write a blog about sandals. It’s one of the trickiest styles of footwear to pull off in style and so many people get it wrong, or at least not as right as they could be getting it.

So, with our mind on our flip-flops, crocs, gladiators, and Waldlaufer sandals, let’s take a look at some of the most important things that you need to learn and understand about sandals, starting with the previous list – two of the styles mentioned are great from a fashion perspective, the other two should be considered only for their functionality.

In other words, wear flip-flops to the beach and crocs at work (e.g. doctors and nurses) but don’t think of them as being at the pinnacle of fashion. In fact, they don’t even reach the base of the fashion mountain!

For the purposes of this article, we’re going to be exploring sandals from the perspective of being out and about in the world, and wanting to look your best. We aren’t going to pay too much attention to functionality (i.e. styles such as flip-flops and crocs).

You’d be surprised to learn that sandals cause people a fair degree of anxiety in the footwear department. First, it’s so easy to get the look wrong (e.g. sandals and socks, shudder). Secondly, some people are very aware of their toes – they can feel exposed and this gives them a constant feeling of impending doom; is someone going to drop something on my foot?

OK, so perhaps that last point is something mainly I feel, but it does bring up an interesting problem: people in general tend to find toes a little icky. for this reason, if you want to make sure that you make it in the fashion stakes while wearing sandals, you must make sure that your toes are well looked after – a pedicure and a touch of nail varnish is perfect and it will set you on the road to looking great in your new sandals.

Strappy sandals, e.g. the gladiator style (although not necessarily restricted to gladiators), look great. they are such an elegant style of shoe…when chosen correctly. The key thing to remember here is to choose a pair of sandals with relatively thin straps. Even brands such as Waldlaufer sandals, who are traditionally associated with good foot health at the expense of fashion, have styles that come with thin straps. These are actually the best type of sandals to wear, because they look good, but they also help you to look after your feet.

Follow the advice outlined above, and you will make some great choices for your winter getaway. Happy holiday!
