IELTS test is of 2 types, Academics and General Training test. Both the test contain four modules. All these modules are mandatory to attempt as the average of all the four gives the final band score.
First module is "Listening"- The purpose of this module is to test the candidate’s listening skill. All the modules are of 9 bands each. Listening test contains 40 questions divided into 4 sections. Each section gets difficult as the test ascends. You would be able to hear 1 section at a time. The total duration of the test is 40 minutes.
Second module is "Reading"- This test analyses your english reading skill. Here 40 questions are divided into 3 sections. Again, the section’s difficulty level increases with increasing question number. Academic test contains abstracts which are more of educational based while the general reading test contains abstract that affect our daily life eg, magazine cut out, brochures etc. The third section in both type of tests is tricky and lengthy.
Third module is Writing- This test is divided into 2 parts. To begin with academics test, part 1 is a description part, where a graph/map or any pictorial reference will be given to the candidate and they have to explain it using at least 150 words. On the other hand, the general test contains letter in the first part. The letter can be formal or informal types.
For both type of tests, par 2 of writing test is essay writing. Here minimum words requirement is 250 words. You need to write both parts of the test using proper format.
The last module is "Speaking"- As the name, this test will analyze your speaking skills in english. All the above mentioned modules were pen and paper type test, but this test would be conducted by an interviewer. He or She would be asking you questions and you would be required to answer them using proper english. Many a times, people get nervous in such kind of situation when they are asked to converse in another language in an interview situation, but, if you have properly practised, then there is actually no need to worry about.
The test is again subdivided into 3 parts. The type of questions changes with the parts, eg. the 1st part focuses on questions with short answers. IN the 2nd part, the interviewer will give you a topic and you have to speak on it for 1-2 minutes, while the 3rd part is the most important round. Here, detailed discussion would take place related to the topic of the 2nd part.
