Packaging refers to confining a single or multiple products of same type into an enclosure that makes handling, distribution and sales easier. Packaging has been there since ancient times and some functions served by packaging during those times still remain relevant. Packaging in previous eras was used mainly for easy handling, batching, transporting and preserving the products. Recent times have added to the functionalities of packaging like imparting information, marketing of products and better sealing and preservation of products.

Efficient packaging is needed by every industry for most of the reasons served by packaging. For example, FMCG industry needs it for easier batching, transport and most importantly marketing of products. Finding the right packaging machine is a matter of research and certain things have to be kept in mind while making a choice. Some of the points to remember can be listed as:

  • Identifying the need – The various purposes that are to be served by packaging should be listed out. For example, some machines are just used to pack things for transport and logistics while some other gives the added advantage of labelling the product and package. Depending on the needs for packaging, machines are customised to give the clients exactly what is needed.
  • Extent of Automation – The degree of automation determines whether packaging unit is semi-automatic or fully automatic. This can be understood by the fact that certain industries need to test random samples manually thereby semi-automatic machineries are preferred while for some others the whole process including quality check can be automated and hence fully automated packaging is used in these cases.
  • Supply-Demand – The demand for a product determines how efficient and productive should be. When demand is low and the productivity of packaging machine is high then products tend to spoil whereas if the demand is high and packaging machine’s productivity is low then it may lead to losses. Hence the supply-demand ratio should be kept in mind while deciding the efficiency of packaging machine.
  • Other Factors – The type of the product at packaging state is one of the principal factors in deciding the type of machine. For example, filling machines are required for amorphous solids, liquids and compressed gas; box packaging is required for heavy and bulk products. Power usage is another factor in deciding the type of machine to be used. Industries prefer machines which can run on the supplied voltage without the need for extra transformers.

Packaging in today’s scenario has become synonymous to a numerous activities such as logistics and marketing of products. Every industry needs packaging in one way or another. Deciding the type of packaging machine to be used is a priority for every venture whether it is small or big. Hence thorough research has to be done on various aspects to come up with the best decision.
